‘What do you see?’ Part 1

‘What do you see?’ asked the sage. ‘I see mountains and a river’ replied the novice. ‘Go study some more…’ said the sage.
‘What do you see?’ asked the sage, a few years later. ‘I don’t see mountains or a river’ replied the seasoned practitioner. ‘Go study some more…’ said the sage.
‘What do you see?’ asked the sage, several years later. ‘I see mountains and a river’ said the teacher. The sage smiled…

T.S. Eliot understood what this apparently meaningless exchange meant when he wrote;

‘We shall not cease from exploration,
And the end of all our exploring,
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.’
